About

What is Tabula Sordida?

Literally, it's "Dirty Slate."

Metaphorically, it alludes to a few things:

  • That nothing in life is truly Tabula Rasa - a Blank, Clean Slate.
  • "There is nothing new under the sun."
  • "We stand on the shoulders of those before us."
  • "All texts are created out of other texts." (Hypertext Theory. More on that later.)
  • ReNew, ReUse, RePurpose, ReMix, ReBoot, ReInvent, ReStart, ReCycle ♻
  • My love for all things Post-Apocalyptic, from Gamma World to Thundarr the Barbarian.

It started in elementary school with the Hobbit, the Narnia books, and Dungeons & Dragons (Blue Book!),  but once I discovered Gamma World, I'd found my home.  Then I found Hiero's Journey, Thundarr, and later the Pliocene Exile series and the Amtrak Wars.  Starting over amongst the ruins of the past always appealed to me.  From crash-landings to nuclear war, my favorite stories always involved "Oops, we did it again!" and it was time for a reboot.

But the prequel to all of that were actually the rides at Disneyland:  the Haunted Mansion, the Pirates of the Caribbean, and especially, the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse.

Then there were my toys:  Fisher-Price Little People sets (I had everything single one), the original GI Joe (who was shorter than Barbie, by the by), hundreds of Legos, and all of my Star Wars toys (and I had all of them, too).

The plotline for all of the stories I told with my toys was inevitably the same - Our Heroes wreck onto a desert island (or crash onto an alien planet) and they find a way to reuse and repurpose everything, while discovering the opportunity to start over and maybe we can get it right this time.
